I have a weight loss blog that features some of my experiences on medifast. Sometimes people contact me to offer encouragement, compliments, or questions. The other day, someone asked "how much weight do most people lose on medifast and how much weight can I expect to lose?" Well, this is a bit of a loaded question. But, I can share with you my experience and what I have observed from others. I find that most people are pleased with their results and lose more weight than they thought that they were going to, but the folks who have the mega success usually have a few things in common. Here are what I think are the variables that will influence how much weight you actually lose.
How Much Are You Willing To Stick With It?: With this diet, you're asked to eat six times per day. You'll eat five of the plan's prepackaged meals and you'll prepare one main, larger, healthful meal yourself. At first, I was not sure that I could eat this often. It seemed like a lot of work, but going along with this is important for a few reasons. First, you'll be less hungry and have less cravings. Second, this will keep your metabolism strong. Finally, it is much better for your body, your energy level, and your digestion to consume smaller, more frequent meals.
Luckily, the meals are convenient and easy. If you can mix a shake, rip the wrapper off of a bar, or put together a bowl of oatmeal, you'll be just fine. For the meal that you make yourself, you'll need to prepare lean protein and veggies or salad. I used to use the George Foreman grill for this, but lately, I've discovered the Nuwave oven which is much faster and eliminates the fat but not the moisture in most foods.
How Long Do You Want To Be On It?: When I first started this diet, I intended to "just try it" or be on it for the short term. However, once I started to see results, I sort of became hooked. Little successes fed upon themselves and I just got used to the new lifestyle that goes hand in hand with this diet.
Generally speaking, you can expect to lose about 2-5 pounds per week on medifast. So, if you do everything right, you're looking at about 15 20 pounds per month. If you want to lose 50 pounds, then you can expect to be on this diet for three months at the least (some will have more plateaus than others). However, three months, or even six, is not too bad for that kind of drastic weight loss. And, you want to lose weight in the right way so that you can actually keep it off.
Are You Willing To Move More?: Before I started this diet, I spent a lot of time in weight loss chat rooms. From this research and my own experience, I can tell you that the folks who approach the 100 pound plus weight loss on medifast and those who want to speed up their results often do so by adding in exercise or additional movement.
The good news is that I know first hand that you don't have to do anything drastic. I've recently added a tiny bit of weight lifting, but previously, all I was doing was power walking after work. This alone ensured I was burning far more calories than I was taking in and no matter what diet you are on, this is the basic equation of weight loss.
Medifast makes this equation easy by providing the nutritionally sound and convenient food, but they can't follow the plan for you. That has to be up to you, but if I can do it, believe me, anyone can.
