How Baby CPR Can Save Your Child`s Life

Babies fill our lives with happy moments and joy. Any parent would do anything for their child. What would you do when your child stops breathing or is choking on something? Most parents find it hard to imagine, and hope that it will never happen to them. If you know what to do in this situation, then you can prevent further injury and even death. The best way to stop a situation in ending in tragedy, is to stay prepared and confident in your CPR skills.

CPR stands for cardio pulmonary resuscitation. CPR is the quickest way to get oxygen and blood to all the main organs like the brain, so they can function. The quicker you are able to perform CPR the better the outcome could be. Even a single minute is important when a heart stops beating.

So who should take an infant CPR class? Any person that has daily interaction with a baby under the age of 1 year should be prepared to know what steps to take in an emergency. Examples are new parents, au pairs, the nanny and the grandparents.

Here are some scenarios where the knowledge of performing proper baby CPR could be of help:

Choking is a major risk for babies. By nature infants are curious and like to put all different things in their mouths. Remember that any small thing a baby can put in his or her mouth is a potential choking hazard. Also be on the look out when the baby is first introduced to solid food. They are not familiar with the texture and sometimes try to put too much food in their mouths. They also play and laugh while eating. Keeping small items out of your baby`s reach and monitoring the child while they eat are great ways to prevent choking.

Drowning is another reason where you could save a life with baby CPR. Babies are unaware of how dangerous water can be. Babies less than a year old cannot learn how to swim. Babies should be kept close when they are near a body of water like pools, lakes, baths and other larger bodies of water. Your baby could drown in a matter of seconds in as little as an inch of water.

SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome is unfortunately when a baby dies without a known cause. Steps you can do to reduce the risk of SIDS are: Do not let anyone smoke cigarettes near your baby.Let your baby sleep on their back on a flat surface.Do not let them sleep with heavy blankets or stuffed toys.

You can take all the precautions, but unfortunately your baby might still choke or stop breathing. By knowing what to do and being prepared is the best chance you can offer your baby. If you are planning to have a baby in the near future, or have one arm yourself with the knowledge of how to protect your newborn. You should also encourage those around your to learn baby CPR.
