subject: How Women Over 40 Need to Diet to Lose Belly Fat [print this page]

Women over 40 start to notice changes in their weight and how it is distributed over their body. For instance, most women will notice that weight settles into their midsection more easily, this is due to hormonal changes. In order for women over 40 to lose this weight they must change the way they diet to lose belly fat. The key thing women want to do to lose abdominal fat is to avoid creating insulin spikes. Insulin spikes in response to carbohydrates and the quicker the carbohydrate breaks down in the body the more intense the spike. Why is this a problem? Because a sharp increase in insulin creates an internal environment in the body that promotes the production and storage of belly and body fat and also decreases your ability to burn fat. Women over 40 want to create a diet to lose belly fat that will allow them to avoid this insulin spike and the best method is to avoid refined carbohydrates that are quickly digested. This would include foods such as baked goods or overly processed foods. I like to say if the carb has been puffed, processed, packaged, popped or made into a pastry it is probably best to avoid it. Another approach women can take to lose fat at the belly through dieting is to finish eating carbohydrates early in the day and then filling the evening hours with proteins and vegetables and even some good fats. These foods do not cause a severe rise in insulin. So women over 40 need to make a few shifts in their diet to lose belly fat and when these shifts have been made they will find it easy to keep their waistline in check.
