Balinese people are very fond of colorful festivals which are too difficult to pass up. A walk around the island where the locals also mill around to do their daily activities will bring you closer to them and learn of their various celebrations. Most of these celebrations are religious and are based on Hinduism as well as Islamic and Christian.

Some of the top Bali holidays is the Galungan which is celebrated every 210 days. This is a celebration which is marked across the island and is Hindu in nature. The Galungan celebration lasts for 10 days wherein activities to commemorate the triumph of good over evil. The people thank their gods for giving them continuous prosperity and the final day of the celebration called the Kuningan marks the most colorful day. Locals wear traditional Balinese clothing where they carry flowers, local fruits, and wood on their heads as they march to the temples.

Another celebration is the Nyepi or the Hindu New Year. This is celebrated during March or April wherein firecrackers, drums, and flaring torches are used to rid the island of evil spirits on the final day of the preceding year. A colorful parade takes place wherein symbols of the evil spirits are burned at midnight as it signals the beginning of the Day of Silence. Locals stay quietly at their homes and no traffic is allowed on the road so that any evil who will land on the island will think tha tthe island is deserted and leave it in peace for the whole year.
