subject: One of Our Corporate Giants Has Demonstrated Some Level of Commitment to Ethical Responsibility [print this page]

Google has set the bar higher than ever before. While we hear about all the big corporate transgressions, abuse of child labor, pollution, and financial irresponsibility, etc. Universally, big business has become known for its lack of ethical standards.

However, recently, Google has demonstrated an extremely rare act of raising its ethical standards announcing they are pulling out of the potentially most lucrative and largest market in the world because of an ethical issue. China has been censoring Googles email service and using it to the detriment of the users. Google unwilling to sell out for profits has decided instead to withdraw its services from the Chinese market. This is a huge breakthrough and deserves attention and support.

The basic issue is that stockholders demand ever increasing profits, thus, forcing directors to require their officers to constantly reduce costs and increase margins so stock gain value. Thus, corporate America does anything they can to yield a higher return for the stock holders. This includes cheapening the product, child labor, and outsourcing, off shore support, anything they can think of to reduce costs and increase the bottom line. Thus, corporations have no moral or ethic guidelines and are controlled only by profit and growth.

Thus, Google has made a huge statement which is revolutionary and unprecedented. It was certainly a huge decision probably made at the Board of Directors level...and very impressive.

It is new ground as it is anti-profit and growth in the largest market in the country on behalf of an ethical stand.

I am hopeful this is the beginning of many similar responsible decisions, unfortunately, I doubt it very much but I can hope and pray.
