subject: Aviane For Pregnancy Prevention [print this page]

Contraceptive pills are considered to be risk-free and effective. You can count on them to take you out of the anxiety and fear of an unsought pregnancy. Women taking Aviane who use it or used it before to dodge gestation are happy with the results of this medication. This birth control pill contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel as active ingredients. Both are synthetic versions of female hormones estrogen and progestin. The presence of these two hormones makes sure you can control your menstrual cycle and prevent ovulation.

How does Aviane birth control pills work?

Aviane works mainly by preventing release of eggs from the ovary and causing changes in cervical mucus and lining of the uterus. The medicine prevents pregnancy, but it has no control over terminating pregnancy. So be very careful not to confuse Aviane with abortion. Also, there is no point taking the medicine after you become pregnant or soon to be pregnant.

What doses should I follow?

Normally a 21-day dosing schedule is initially recommended, to be followed by a brief placebo dosing. You can start taking the medicine after your menstrual cycle begins. But if you see any unusual delay in your next period, go and see a doctor and get a pregnancy test done.

Use an alternative birth control method with Aviane during the first month of dosing. It will prevent any possibility of pregnancy should Aviane fail.

What do I need to know before I use Aviane?

Aviane is a combination birth control pill. It means you should not take the pill if any of its ingredients impacts your health adversely. Do not take the medicine if you are currently suffering from heart problems or have suffered from similar problems in the past. This type of contraceptive method is contraindicated for certain types of hormonal cancers such as breast cancer, liver cancer or uterine cancer. Also, do not take Aviane if you suffer from high blood pressure, migraine pains, blood clot, or vaginal discharges. Take note that for a smoker aged over 35 years, starting an Aviane contraceptive regimen may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Lactating women should not take Aviane birth control pills because the medicine tends to decrease milk production and can also affect the baby.

Do not take more than 1 pill per day. Doing so won't prevent pregnancy any faster than the normal one-tablet-a-day schedule. It can cause you a feeling of sickness in your stomach and let you down. If you throw up within an hour from taking the pill, consult your doctor, you may be asked to take another pill. But do not take decisions on your own.

Always bear in mind that it's better to stick to a regular contraceptive method. Regular birth control pills like Aviane are far more effective in preventing pregnancy than their emergency counterparts. Aviane or any birth control pill does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, so always use a condom while having sex with your partner.
