Relationship building is the most fundamental skill of all successful businesses, whether the relationship is between a consumer and a brand or a servicing company and a client. A successful relationship has to be established in order for business to be carried out, maintained and then, (with luck, care and a hint of tenacity) developed. Without good relationships an account manager has no account to manage and therefore no role. It is all too common to see ineffective account managers, inherit business from their more successful predecessor, to only loose it within a short period of time. There are those who believe that this phenomenon occurs because new relationships are uncomfortable to begin with, but it is also true to say, that someone who is a good relationship builder and understands the needs of their new clients, is able to relay a strong message of assurance to those they inherit. Relationship is key to the role of account managers. Without the ability to sustain positive business relationships, account managers find themselves in a precarious position, and at a frighteningly quick pace. When relationships are developed, development of those businesses then needs to be carried out. Account managers can cross sell other services and products their own business has to offer, or indeed, they can build relationships with their client that facilitate them networking with their clients in such a way that the client makes referrals for them. For example, a good recruitment consultant/account manager, will cross develop throughout a business and then source other positions from the clients of their own clients. Account management is not for the sleepy, but can prove to be a lucrative and fulfilling position for the "switched on".Account management requires excellent communications skills, with particular reference to skills employed while working in presentations, day to day electronic communications etc. The other skill set that can't be stressed enough is interpersonal skills. Without the ability to relate to clients and then back to staff in their own organization, account managers soon find themselves in situations that the United Nations couldn't help them out of. Diplomacy, sensitivity and an awareness of what could happen in worse case scenarios, are skills that an effective account manager employs and doesn't even realize they are using them. The ought to come naturally.Account management jobs can be sourced by a variety of methods. Specialist recruitment consultants, press and internet websites all hold account management jobs.
