How Safe Is Medifast?
How Safe Is Medifast?

I've lost a good bit of weight on this diet and have been on it for quite a while. I can not tell you how many people question my results, asking questions like, "are you starving yourself?," "is it safe to lose weight this way?," or "is this really healthy?" Now, I'm not a doctor, but I do regularly see one, and I can share with you what he has told me and what my experience has been on this diet. I'd also like to expel a lot of myths and misunderstandings I often experience by folks who are just misinformed.

How Medifast Works And Why I Think It Is Safe For Those Who Use It As Directed: When I first started this diet, my mother and girlfriends were mortified that I was going on a "starvation" or liquid only diet. Let me say right up front that I don't drink shakes all day and I am definitely not starving. Shakes are one choice on this diet - not the only one. I happen to like them a lot, but even so, I only consume a few per day at most. There are over 75 foods on this plan - like eggs, chili, stew, soup, oatmeal, etc. And, you eat six times per day. At one of those six meals, you'll eat a large, healthful meal that consists of fresh protein and vegetables that you make yourself.

The foods are high in protein and low in calories. They are prepackaged, but you are required to prepare the one meal yourself so that you are getting the variety of fresh foods and nutrients that your body needs. Eating so frequently keeps your metabolism up and ensures that you are getting enough. Now, going from say 2800 calories per day to a little over a thousand takes some adjustments, but the diet is designed to both provide your body what it needs and encourage it to burn it's own fat (because of the high protein state.)

I wasn't nearly as hungry as I feared and I never felt ill. But, I do think there is a small subset of people who completely over do this and do not follow the diet as planned. Eating less than the six meals provided, consuming only shakes, or skipping the lean and green meal are not smart ideas. And, taking these unwise liberties are what gives rise to misconceptions about this diet. I've never understood why people do this. Medifast works so well and is very effective if you follow the directions and eat a variety of the large selection of foods that you are given. There's really no need to get any more drastic than that.

Medifast Medical Studies: This diet was designed by doctors and has been tested / studied by researchers at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. During that study, it was found that people on Medifast lost more weight and complied with their diets almost twice as much as folks on the ADA (American Dietetic Association) low carb diet. There are probably many reasons for this, but the study was encouraging to me.

I believe that Medifast has been more safe for me than allowing myself to continue on the path towards bad habits and bad health. I have always been very careful to follow the plan to the letter and I've always shared my intentions with my doctor. I firmly believe that if you don't take drastic short cuts and you use the food as it was designed and then go to the maintenance part of the plan once you've reached a reasonable and healthy weight loss goal, you can safely lose an appropriate and healthy amount of weight on this diet. But any questions about this are best addressed by your doctor, of course.
