subject: How Much Can I Reasonably Expect To Lose After A Month On Medifast? [print this page] How Much Can I Reasonably Expect To Lose After A Month On Medifast?
Irecently heard from someone who had a very specific goal of losing 15 pounds in a month. She had an important outing coming up and she wanted to look her best. She wanted to know if this goal was possible after a month of Medifast meals. And, she wanted to know if perhaps there was a way to reach this goal sooner so that she could order the individual foods rather than the package. I will tell you my opinion on this in the following article.
The Amount Of Weight That The Average Person Will Lose After A Month Of Medifast: To figure out this calculation, there are a couple of places to look. You can look at the information that the company provides in its literature. You can look at other people's personal experiences. And, you can look at the clinical studies that have been conducted on this diet.
The Medifast company literature gives the range of 2 - 5 pounds lost per week as a range that most people find themselves in. And, many forums and weight loss blog posts will indicate that this is reasonably accurate (although like with most things, there are some who do better than this and some who do worse.) In terms of clinical studies, you can consider a study at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that was conducted over 16 weeks. The men in the study lost an average of 69.71 pounds. The women lost an average of 47.5 pounds. The average of these two is 58.6 pounds. This averages out to be 3.66 pounds per week.
Since 3.5 pounds is the average of the Medifast's estimates and this is very close to the 3.6 pounds per week in the study, I will use this number. If my reader were to be in this range, she would theoretically lose 14- 15 pounds in one month range. (That's if she were right in the middle of the range.)
She was happy and content with these results and she wanted to lose the weight gradually and safely so that it would "stick," as she put it. But, she wanted to know how some people are about to lose five pounds or more in a week. She wanted to know how realistic this upper end really was?
In my experience, the people who lose this type of weight also exercise or are very careful about their "lean and green meals." They are very careful about eating low glycemic foods. To my knowledge, most of these estimates exclude considering exercise. In my experience, you don't have to make drastic exercise efforts to see results. Even power walking or biking can burn more calories and make the weight come off a little faster. Not only that, but you'll get a longer, leaner look which can make you look more thin. With just a little bit of muscle tone, this reader's 15 pound weight loss could well look like more.
In terms of buying the foods individually, I told her that I didn't think this was the best idea, simply because she would be paying more this way and she risked running out of food and having to pay for shipping all over again. If you order a package, you can use the coupons and end up getting by for much cheaper than trying to buy the foods a la carte without coupons.
