subject: Strategy for Re-Buy Tournaments [print this page] Re-buy tournaments are a bit trickier than standard poker tournaments in that they require a slightly different approach to early- to mid-game plays than you may normally take otherwise. This is generally done due to the fact that re-buy tournaments allow you an ability to gain extra leverage at the beginning of a tournament, which can, if played right, make you the chip leader early on and allow you to stay there for the remainder of the tournament. Let's say, for instance, you normally are a bit tighter on your plays during a standard tournament, trying to keep from losing most of your cash early on so that you can have a better chance at taking a stronger position in the mid-game rounds. A re-buy tournament, on the other hand, can instantly turn a player in a lower position into a chip leader by allowing them to re-buy a set number of chips if they go below their starting amount or a set amount, as indicated by the casino. This ability allows for stronger plays to be made in the early game that, if used properly, can even put you ahead of the other players at your table, even if you fold and then re-buy after the first round to gain additional chips. Many re-buy tournaments also have additional add-on chips available. This allows players to pay a small fee to add additional chips to their stack at any time to give themselves more leverage at the table and possibly in the overall tournament. Add-ons, if available, should generally be treated in a similar fashion as re-buys and should be utilized as often as possible to give yourself an edge and increase your chances of making it into the paying bubble. You should generally not purchase an add-on, however, if the add-on will give you less than 10% of the chips in your stack or there is no threat to you as a chip leader. Otherwise, purchase as many add-ons as are allowed, as there will be no harm in solidifying your position at a table even more, while helping to give yourself a stronger basis for advancement. Many re-buy tournaments may also have limits on the number of re-buys or add-ons possible or may operate with set time limits where re-buys and add-ons are only allowed within a certain time period. If this is the case, make sure that you read all tournament rules carefully and understand them thoroughly, so that you can take full advantage of any re-buys and add-ons while still in the allowed time frame. Failing to do this could easily leave you at a strong disadvantage compared to the other players at your table, as it will prevent you from being able to fully realize any power plays you could make early on, effectively removing a powerful tool at your disposal. After the re-buy timer has run out, you should then return to playing the tournament in the same way you would a standard poker tournament, making sure to adjust your plays back to normal. Since the re-buy protection is no longer available, a wrong move now may knock you out of the tournament entirely.
