Trade Unions - Helping Employees Voice Their Needs

A trade union is an organization formed by workers to meet their common needs. The list of common needs may include better working conditions, payment problems, time of work etc. The unions were first formed in Europe. With the industrial revolution setting in, trade unions spread to other countries too. The members of these organizations can be ranged from the unemployed to the extreme professionals. They all work toward s the same aim. The aim of these organizations is to get better employment and better conditions.

In the early times, the duty performed by these organizations was to insure its members if there is a situation of unemployment. It also helped if there was a situation of health problems, post-death expenses etc. Later they began to help the employees achieve their basic needs like payment increase and other very important issues. They can go to very extreme means of protests too if their needs are not satisfied.

Trade unions came into existence during the 18th century. However, in the US, even in 18th century there could be no significant changes brought about by these unions. There were also not many members for these unions from the country. Federation of Trades and Labor Unions is the first union that was founded in the US that was solely connected with the labor unions. Later it became the American Federation of Labor. This was in 1886. Later in 1894, when there arose a problem in the Pullman Palace Car Company, the American Rail Union supported the workers and went on a large strike which followed many strikes and also many other legal procedures.

In United Kingdom, the trade unions were legalized in 1871. There are around 7 and a half million members in this organization which makes it the nation's largest organization. But, in the recent past, the members are mainly from the shops and offices and very less from the industrial workers.

These organizations fight for the basic needs of the employees and help them achieve it and make their life easier.
