Smartphones are big news these days, and Android phones are especially popular, with Android phones significantly outselling the iPhone 4 during 2010. And the most popular Android phone of the moment, in the UK at least, is the HTC Desire.
The HTC Desire is almost the perfect mobile phone. HTC have been developing Android phones since the operating system first became available, and the Desire is an upgraded version of previous models such as the HTC Hero. Early Android models had something of a "beta" feel to them, but not so with the Desire, which feels like a mature, polished phone. In fact, it's almost the ideal mobile.
Like all Android phones, the HTC Desire is a touchscreen phone. The screen measures an enormous 3.7 inches diagonally (that's more than the iPhone 3G S) and has a high resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The AMOLED display is super-sharp too. It's a capacitive touchscreen, which makes it supremely responsive to the touch. As well as the touchscreen, the Desire has a row of real buttons situated below the screen. The phone itself feels well made. It's quite large and weighty to hold, but at just 11.9mm thickness, it belongs to the class of "ultraslim" phones.
The Desire runs the latest version of Android version 2.2, nicknamed "Froyo" and HTC have added their own user interface called HTC Sense, which makes the Desire one of the easiest of the Android phones to use. The pinch-to-zoom capability also helps to make for a seamless user experience. Being an Android phone, the Desire comes bundled with plenty of Google-related products, such as easy access to gmail, Google search and Google Maps. In fact you'll need to register for a free Google account to make the most of the device.
One of the reasons why the user interface feels so smooth is the high-powered processor that powers the phone. It's a 1 GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor, which is pretty much the fastest processor ever seen on a mobile phone. There's also plenty of Ram available to support apps: 576MB of RAM, plus the ability to add a microSD memory card of up to 32GB of external storage.
One of the best features of any Android phone is access to the Android Market, where you can download apps from a choice of thousands many of them free. The Android Market now rivals the iPhone when it comes to choice. Apps range from productivity and utility tools to business apps and games.
As well as making calls and acting like a mini computer, the Desire comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera and a GPS receiver. The camera has face detection, autofocus and a LED flash and is capable of recording video too. The GPS receiver enables geo-tagging of photos and works with Google Maps to find your location. It also supports special geo-tagging software from HTC called Footprints and there's a digital compass too.
The Desire can easily replace your music player too. It has a digital media player and an FM radio included. The media player supports all popular digital music formats. You can connect a pair of high quality headphones via the 3.5mm audio jack, or use a stereo Bluetooth headset to listen to music and make calls. With 32GB of storage available, you'll easily be able to store all your music and many hours of video too.
One of Google's main goals in developing the Android platform was to promote the use of the mobile internet, so it comes as no surprise to learn that the web browsing experience on the Desire is first-rate. The large screen helps significantly, as does the responsive touchscreen with its pinch-to-zoom capability. Data transfer speeds are fast too, with fast uploads and downloads over a HSPA-enabled 3G network, or via WiFi. As well as a web browser there are dedicated widgets for Facebook and Twitter and other social media.
In addition to 3G and WiFi, the Desire's connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate, with A2DP support for wireless stereo headsets and a mini-USB connector.
Battery life can be challenging for smartphones, and the Desire is no exception. Despite being equipped with a huge 1400 mAh capacity battery, many people find that they need to recharge their phones every day. Still, this is in part because the phones have so many features that their owners use them all day! You can conserve battery life by switching off WiFi and GPS when you don't need them.
The HTC Desire is almost the perfect phone in our opinion. Not only is it supremely powerful, but it's also very easy to use. The surprising fact is that despite offering so much, it costs a lot less than the iPhone 4, and is available free on monthly contract from around 25 pounds a month. At Mobile-Phones-UK.org.uk, we've rated the phone at 5 out of 5, and our readers have done the same. That's something that doesn't happen too often!
