In terms of electrical usage, these switches are the mechanical devices that are responsible for passing of the current through the electrical circuit. The switches, having the 'on' and 'off' positions keep the electrical circuit intact and let the current to pass through if it is put 'on' and as soon as it is put on the 'off' mode, it breaks the electrical circuit, thereby stopping the current from flowing. The common toggle switches have an elbow-like pivot. When the switch is put on, the pivot snaps and connects the two arms, which lets the current to pass through.
These switches are commonly referred to any kind of switching device that that controls the flow of current. The switch is more or less considered to be gate, and its schematic symbol also resembles a gate. The idea of the gate evolved from the fact that when the gate is closed, there is contact between the two arms and hence, the current can flow through the circuit and when the gate is opened, the contact breaks and the flow of current stops.
The conceptual theory behind toggle switches is very simple but its implications in terms of electrical theory are very far reaching. The gate theory brings up the factor of 'either/or, i.e. the switch is either 'on' or 'off'. It may also be explained in the form of opening or closing as an opened gate allows current to flow through the circuit while a closed gate does not. The most common toggle switches are the ones that we use every day for turning the electricity in our homes 'on' and 'off' but it has various other uses in various fields.
