Differences In Dissertations Of Masters And Doctorate Students

Depending on the level of qualification, a dissertation is required to earn either a Masters or Doctorate degree. As there is a level of difference between the two degrees, its obvious that preparing a dissertation for a PhD Student will be significantly different than one being prepared by a Masters student.

For starters, a dissertation isnt necessarily named the same in PhD; instead it is called a thesis. Therefore we can conclude that it is known as a dissertation for Masters students and a thesis for PhDs. But the difference is not just in the name.

Majority of universities treat dissertations and thesis differently. Here are some of the key differences between how a Masters student prepares a Dissertation as opposed to how a PhD prepares a Thesis:

1.A Dissertation by a Masters student requires sufficient information regarding a particular discipline and valid arguments along with it. Whereas a PhD Thesis requires dissemination of knowledge to the reviewer.

2.A Master's dissertation normally takes a year to complete, whereas a PhD Thesis is prepared along with the degree tenure and takes a very long time to complete.

3.The quantity of the material used in a Masters Dissertation is relatively less as compared to a PhD Thesis, which requires a larger amount of content.

4.Furthermore, the quality and writing standards for a Dissertation & Thesis are significantly different, as a Masters Dissertation requires relatively lower writing and presentation abilities than a Thesis.

5.The evaluation and review of a Thesis is conducted more strictly than a Dissertation, as the committee will comprise of members that specifically cater to either Dissertations or Thesis.

6.Preparation of a Masters Dissertation is relatively easier as students can ask their professors for assistance; however a PhD Thesis requires students to be more independent while conducting research and preparation.

7.A Masters dissertation is much relatively shorter in length than a PhD Thesis, considering the material being used. A Masters student can prepare a dissertation from 10-20000 words [or 80-100 pages], while a PhD thesis takes more than 90,000 to 100,000 words [or 300-400 pages.]

The most important thing to keep in mind is that a Dissertation is reflective of the caliber of the student and his/her years of experience and study. On the other hand, a PhD Thesis requires a lot more years in research for a particular subject, as it takes a lot of years for research and writing a good thesis.
