subject: Think You're Paying Out Too Much Money? Check Out These Six Bills You Can Reduce Easily [print this page]

As Brits, we have a particularly attractive quality of not minding paying a certain amount of money for a product or service as long as we know that we're getting good value for money.

Rather than looking for the cheapest option, irrelevant of the quality of the product or service, we tend to go for the option that means we get the best quality item for our individual budgets.

However, there comes a time when a lot of people need to start looking at how they can reduce the amount of money they're spending on certain services, as they can't continue to keep paying out the same amount of money each month.

Fortunately, this doesn't mean that you have to skimp on quality and the following six bills can all be saved on easily without detracting from the service that's being delivered.

1. Gas and electric - as gas prices have risen over the past few weeks, with British Gas in particular increasing the cost of their gas by 7 percent, there are two things that you can do to easily reduce the cost of both of these utilities.

First of all, you need to take out a package that has both gas and electric combined, as paying for them separately very rarely puts you in a better financial position.

Secondly, you should take out the company's online package, as this is more often than not the cheapest option.

2. Broadband - with dozens of broadband providers available up and down the UK, the market is particularly competitive at the moment and there's no reason why you can't find a competitive price from the number of broadband providers that are available.

Look at what you need, how much you'd ideally like to pay and then head online to use comparison websites.

3. Home telephone - the quickest way to save money on your home telephone is to get it taken out. Once a necessity in any home, with the popularity of mobile phones, there generally isn't any need to have a home phone if you have a reliable mobile service.

4. Satellite or cable television - something that's become synonymous with a family household, a satellite or cable television subscription can be great, but it can also be particularly costly.

Instead of reverting back to the standard BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV 1, Channel 4 and Five channels, consider getting a Freeview box instead, which allows you to watch a variety of channels with no monthly subscription.

5. Grocery shopping - the problem that many have with grocery shopping is that when they get to the supermarket, they don't actually know what they need and end up buying more items than they require.

Therefore, to save money on your grocery shopping, the simple answer is to write a shopping list and stick to it rigidly.

6. Water supply - the best way to save money on your water bills is to have a water meter installed, as this means that you only pay for the exact amount of water that you use.

However, only houses that have more bedrooms than people will generally benefit - if you have just as many people as bedrooms, you need to look more in-depth at your water usage.
