Driver Detective would be a lot more valuable as a driver updater if its interface weren't backwards. Generally, programs have you open to a home tab and scan your computer. Once the scan is complete, it should give you results. Driver Detective does things in the exact opposite way. It scans your computer, gives you your results and then goes to the homepage. Users who are used to the typical format are going to get confused and begin looking for different driver update software. If the manufacturer decided to reverse the order of these operations, it's hard to imagine it would make this driver update software any better. When you're dealing with any program, being able to navigate through its interface easily is very important. A program might have a lot of solid features, but those features mean nothing if you can't find where they are.
Features:
Driver Detective has features you would typically find in driver update software, such as a scanning engine and download history, with a few exceptions. It does offer scan intelligence options that gears the recommendations for drivers to update to meet the needs of your system. There are three options in this feature which are Universal Match Intelligence, OEM Match Intelligence and Motherboard Match Intelligence. Each one is self-explanatory. They give universal, OEM and motherboard drivers priority, respectively. The EZ Migrator option gives you the opportunity to create a CD for when you're upgrading, reloading or downgrading your operating system.
Ease of Use:
The actual features in Driver Detective are easy to use once you get past the confusing, backwards interface. It's difficult to extract a lot of usefulness from this program because it tries to make itself out to be more than it really is. Adding an unnecessary number of steps doesn't improve the program. It just makes it more complex and users are going to stray away from them sooner or later. This program would be a much more useful utility if it was simplified.
Effectiveness:
When we performed a scan with Driver Detective, it came up with three drivers it thought were out of date. Luckily, we only found one false positive among these results, which is pretty good for driver update software. The remaining drivers that actually needed to be updated were for important devices, so we were grateful this program found the ancient drivers before something bad happened to our system.
Help and Support:
Normally, when a program only has a contact form or email as its only help and support options, it would be ranked a lot lower in this category but that's not the case when it comes to Driver Detective. While we would've liked to have seen more features in this area, the quality of what they offer in this area is capable of replacing what they're missing. They should still fill out their help and support feature set though.
Summary:
Driver Detective is driver update software that could use some tweaking. If the manufacturer was to reconfigure the interface, add new features and beef up the features that are presently in the program, it would be a lot better than it currently is. Until then, it's below average and in need of a lot of work.
