The sleepy little town of Gangotri is located in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarkhand in India. The ruler of the Gods Indra feared that his position was at stake and therefore stole away the horse and tied it near Sage Kapil's ashram. While searching for the horse the sons reached the ashram and upon finding the horse there stormed into the Ashram, but were reduced to ashes by the wrath of Sage Kapil.
The temple of Gangotri is situated at an elevated height of 3048 m amidst beautiful surroundings. Gangotri is located over 99 km from the district of Uttarkashi. The Gangotri temple was constructed in the 18th century by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and is situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River.
