subject: Why Do Women Get Liposuction? [print this page]

Liposuction (also known as suction lipectomy and lipoplasty) is extremely popular today's world, and it is especially so among women. In America, hundreds of thousands of lipoplasties are performed every year, and the majority of them are performed on women. In fact, last year, roughly 90% of all lipectomies performed in America were done on women.

Studies show that more and more women are becoming open to the idea of undergoing cosmetic surgery. Exactly why this is the case is not entirely understood. Some suggest that it is due to the breaking down of societal taboos and the reduction of stigmas regarding cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction. Others suggests that the rise can instead be traced to an increased pressure on women to conform to societal standards of beauty.

Women undergo lipoplasty for a number of reasons. Of course, improving one's appearance tends to be a constant, but women have a large variety of reasons for wanting to improve their appearance. Some do it simply for personal fulfillment or to improve their self-image. Some do it because they think that it will help them attract friends or an intimate partner. Still others choose elective surgery to improve their appearance because they think that it will help them to succeed and be more successful in their career.

Among women, lipoplasty is one of the very most popular of all cosmetic surgeries. According to statistics published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it invariably ranks as either the number one or second most popular cosmetic surgery each year. The only cosmetic surgery which competes with liposuction in popularity is breast augmentation.

The surgery is typically performed under local anesthetic, and it involves the removal of excess fat from specific target areas with the use of special hollow needles called cannulas. After the target area is numbed, the doctor makes one or several small incisions and inserts a cannula. The cannula, which is hooked up to a vacuum machine, breaks up and suctions out the excess fat as the doctor moves it back and forth through the target area.

Some of the most popular areas for women to receive liposuction include the abdomen, the hips and thighs, the buttocks and the breasts. However, a number of other places are possible, including the face and neck, the arms, the knees and the back. Because of improvements in technology, lipoplasty can now treat almost any area on the body where excess buildups of fat are present.
