subject: Why Do Men Get Liposuction? [print this page]

Liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is a large business, and its popularity is growing among men. Although many people still consider cosmetic surgeries such as lipoplasty to be the exclusive domain of women, men are beginning to be a larger and larger presence when it comes to cosmetic surgery. Current estimates suggest that men comprise somewhere between 10% and 25% of all lipectomies. While this may not initially sound impressive, when one considers that every year somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 liposuctions are performed in America every year, then one realizes that these relatively small percentages represent large numbers of operations.

Surveys show that men are becoming more interested in cosmetic surgery. Men today think more favorably about lipoplasty than they did twenty years ago, and greater percentages of men today say that they would consider undergoing cosmetic surgery than they did before. In one startling survey performed in Britain recently, more men a responded favorably to the idea of cosmetic surgery than women.

There are a number of different theories as to why society is seeing this surge in men's interest in cosmetic surgery in general and liposuction in particular. Some believe that it has to do with the relaxation of gender stereotypes. They state that we live in a more open society in which gender roles are becoming more fluid. Because of this, men can feel comfortable doing things that were previously considered feminine or effeminate, such as undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Others suggest that the rise is due to American society's ever-increasing focus on physical perfection. Just as women and girls see images of idealized beauty in Hollywood and other forms of media, men are also being subjected to more physical scrutiny. Many men feel obligated to have the tight six-pack abs, the bulging biceps and the taut jawline that they see demonstrated by today's stars.

Some might suggest that a spreading of liposuction to men is entirely expectable. The last decades have seen the expansion of lipoplasty across a number of societal lines. For example, the surgery has expanded in popularity throughout a variety of age groups. While middle-aged people still receive the majority of lipectomies, more and more younger people are undergoing the surgery, and a number of older people are too. Similarly, the availability of surgical financing has made lipectomies available to more of the middle class. The surgery is also beginning to spread across ethnic boundaries. Although caucasians still represent the vast majority of cosmetic surgeries, other ethnic groups are beginning to undergo the procedures more and more.

Whatever the reason, male lipoplasty has made a large increase in popularity recently, and it seems likely that its growth will continue.
