However the case with me was that the last line was better changed to Tis the Season to be podgy. Mince pies, sausage rolls, Christmas cake, nuts and chocolate. All was fantastic, but not very good for me. Now I am wiser, thinner and healthier for it. Here is what I do at Christmas to enjoy myself at the parties and not gain weight.

I start by drinking water before going out. This means I am half full and my body is going to cope better with any food and alcohol if I drink some. Have a piece of fruit as well.

I will walk round to the party or ride my bicycle. That means I get a bit of extra exercise in. If it is too far then I will drive and offer to take any other friends as well. The latter is great for having the perfect excuse to stay off calorific booze.

Nobody will notice you arriving late at a Christmas party, in fact it is expected. From a weight controller's point of view it means you are less likely to have tempting hors d'oeuvre passed in front of your nose before the main meal. Mind you, you probably won't want to much now because you drank lots of water and had that fruit snack before coming out.

You are called to the main table be it a buffet or sit down dinner. Before you there is a table of scrumptious food, but you need to focus on the healthy stuff like the vegetables, carrot and celery sticks and high fiber savory delights. Those are your priority. Then take a small amount from the other accompanying plates. Done subtly nobody will notice at all. If you are at a buffet now is the time to walk away from the table.

If you have followed the plan above, you will go light on the desserts because you will already be full.

If it is the sort of party where dancing is going on, join in. Dancing can burn a whole load of calories.
I take full advantage of Christmas vacations and after a party with my zero or limited alcohol intake, I am fresh the next morning to get in an extra walk. Following the tips above means you can go partying over the Christmas holiday and know that you are in control of your weight program.
