Weight and The Bedroom

Most people know that being overweight is bad for your physical health. Now, it appears that being overweight or obese is also bad for your sex life, especially if you are a woman.

A new study examined 10,000 French men and women between the ages of 18 and 59 about their sexual experiences. European researchers analyzed the findings based on the participants' body mass index. Individuals with a body mass index of 18 to 24 were considered to be of a healthy weight. Participants with a body mass index of 25 or more were considered to be overweight. Volunteers with a body mass index of 30 or more were considered to be obese.

They found that obese women were 30 percent less likely to have had a sexual partner in the past year than women of a normal weight. However, there were few differences in the number of sexual partners among obese men and men of a normal weight. About 70 percent of overweight or obese women had partners who were of similar weight, but only 40 percent of overweight or obese men had partners of the same size. In addition, obese women were less likely to seek birth control and four times more likely to become pregnant. However, both obese men and women tended to have sex just as often as men and women of a normal weight.

Previous studies have found similar conclusions. Researchers suggest that physical problems and other issues such as low self-esteem probably contribute to these statistics. Moreover, the increased risk of diabetes, depression, and urinary stress incontinence among those who are obese can affect sexual activity. Muscular or skeletal problems resulting from excess weight can also make sex difficult, thus leading to lower rates.

The results of this study shed new light on some of the common problems faced by men and women who are overweight or obese.
