Your acceptance into the elite Navy SEALS training program depends largely upon your state of mind and your level of physical fitness.
The Navy SEALS Physical Screening Test (PST) consists of several tasks with minimum scores that must be obtained to be accepted into the training program. To improve your success at the PST, you should strive for maximum scores, referred to as "competitive" scores. These scores are included in your application package and are a major factor in determining your acceptance or refusal. Therefore, it is up to you to prepare your body to perform these tasks to the best of your ability.
The Physical Screening Test (PST)
The PST challenges you to do your very best in five events. The first event is a 550-yard swim using the breast or side stroke in less than 12:30 minutes. A competitive score is granted if the event is completed in 10:30 minutes. You will then perform as many push-ups as you can in 2:00 minutes, with 42 being the minimum and 79 being competitive. Sit-ups are another event, for which you are also given 2:00 minutes to perform between 50 and 79 sit-ups. There is no time limit for the 6 to 11 dead hang pull-ups event, but you must continue to strive for competitive scores. Finally, there is a 1.5 mile run in boots and trousers that must be completed in under 11:30 minutes, 10:20 being considered competitive. There are no exceptions to these minimum scores.
Pride, Persistence And Ability
If your have prepared yourself well enough for the PST and gained acceptance into the assessment and training program, you should be proud of yourself. You should also be prepared to push yourself even harder. The Navy SEALS training program is one of the most challenging that the military has to offer. SEALS training starts with 4-12 weeks of Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School, followed by 3 weeks of Indoctrination, and ending with 24 weeks of Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training.
Only one-third of the young men who have attempted Navy SEAL training program actually complete the BUD/S Phase One training, also known as Hell Week. By the time candidates reach the 4-1/2 week parachute training and the 16 week Navy SEAL Qualification Training, fully 70-80% of the candidates will have been eliminated. This demonstrates the high level of commitment and dedication found in all Navy SEALS graduates.
