Cures For Pregnancy Heartburn

Why do we get heartburn during pregnancy?

There are a few reasons why pregnant women get heartburn during pregnancy. The most common reason is that at the end of the oesophagus there is a sphincter valve which is normally closed, sealing acids and undigested food inside your stomach. When you eat, food travels down the oesophagus and through this valve into your stomach. During pregnancy all your insides are getting squished up to make room for your precious little baby. Therefore your stomach cannot handle the amount of food you're used to. Which means it will become overfilled very easily and spill over, rushing through the valve and back up your oesophagus tube causing your heartburn. Some women seem to suffer more than others.

Another reason is that the hormone estrogen is being released in your body and softening up all of your ligaments in preparation for the birth. The ligamentskeeping the lower esophageal sphincter tightly closed are now softer and don't close as tightly as they should. The only cure for this is to give birth! Unfortunately we have no idea of knowing when this is going to happen so it's a good idea to use some other solutions to ease the heartburn.

On a side note if you were hoping for a baby with head full of head you might just get one, apparently, estrogen also promotes hair growth on your baby

Here are some tips you can use to help ease or cure your heartburn.

Avoid spicy, fatty and rich foods as much as possible. These can aggravateheartburn.

Eat small, frequent meals during the day rather than three large meals. Try to eat at least one to two hours prior to lying down. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

Avoid trigger' foods. Some women find bread or yeast sets off theirheartburn. They need to cut down on these foods.

Drink plenty of fluids. Manywomen notice they cannot drink at the same time as eating and that theytolerate fluids better between meals.

Avoid carbonated drinks.

Reduce or avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol, or smoking cigarettes. Theseirritate the stomach and should be avoided in pregnancy anyway. Perhapsyour heartburn may motivate you to give these up during the pregnancy.

Sleep propped up with several pillows or a wedge. Elevating your upper body will help keep your stomach acids where they belong and will aid your digestion.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid any tightness around your waist and tummy.

Bend at the knees instead of at the waist. Bending from your waist will put pressure on your stomach.

If dietary changes are not helpful, you might try some herbal remedies':

Papaya enzyme is an effective heartburn remedy that is safe during pregnancy. Papaya contains digestive enzymes and can be taken in a variety of ways fresh, dried, canned, juiced, or even in tablet form. Eat a small amount after meals to aid digestion and discourage heartburn.

Slippery Elm powder (to neutralize the stomach acid). This may be mixedwith warm milk, cinnamon and honey (or marshmallow root).

Meadowsweet, Fennel, Aniseed and Peppermint teas. A combination offennel, anise, cumin and dill seeds chewed before and after meals.

Peppermint water, available at chemists

There are also some herbal antacids available.

If all else fails, you could ask your doctor about taking some appropriateantacids. Antacids based on a mixture of aluminium, magnesium and calciumand taken in liquid or tablet form are sometimes recommended, butincreasing your intake of aluminium may not be good for other reasons.
