subject: Fun Or Finances - What Should You Focus On In 2011? [print this page]

2011 is almost here and many of us are setting goals making those annual New Year's resolutions. This is an effective way to improve your life.

But it's important to be responsible with your money at the same time.

TD Ameritrade conducts an annual New Year's Resolution Survey. You shouldn't worry to much about money. But you should find a way to stay within your budget while you find new ways to relax and have fun. 67 percent of those questioned plan on having more fun in 2011. The same number or respondents (67%) want to reduce stress in the New Year.

However, staying on top of finances is still important. TD Ameritrade found 75 percent of those who took the survey still plan on making at least one finance-related resolution for 2011. That number rose 2% from last year and it's 6% higher than the New Year's resolutions made in 2009 when just 59% said they wanted to save more money.

It's been a tough few years in the United States. While the recession may technically be over, many Americans are still struggling. The Unemployment rate is hovering just under 10% and millions of homeowners are having a tough time paying their mortgages. It doesn't seem like a good time for most Americans to consider an extravagant family vacation.

Yet the TD Ameritrade study shows people are feeling more confident in their ability to handle their bills and write checks to pay off debt.

65% respondents said they plan to save more money in 2011. A new survey found Americans want to spend more time relaxing in 2011, but they still think money matters are very important.

63% of people think they'll be able to pay off their credit card debit in 2011. 79% felt they'd be able to write personal That number is unchanged from last year. More than half of those questioned say while they are still a little uncertain, they also feel more optimistic about the U.S. economy.

Since there is more confidence in where things are heading - Americans are making goals that are about improving their quality of life.

"People are talking more about having fun this year, and that really goes to show that Americans are showing signs of optimism in terms of their perception of financial markets and the state of the economy," Nicole Sherrod, of TD Ameritrade told Reuters about the survey. "They no longer want to reflect on the past."

Being optimistic is a good thing, and so is finding time to relax and have fun with your family. Those who took part in the TD Ameritrade study indicated they are feeling more confident in their ability to handle bills and send. Failing to do so could mean that you only have to deal with even more stress.

The best thing you can do is find financial balance in 2011. Don't freak out over your finances, but make sure you remain in control of you spending habits and look for ways to relax that won't stretch your bank account.
