Everyone claims to know of some aged relative who lived to be a hundred and they ate fatty meat, smoked like a chimney, and drank a bottle of whiskey a day. I have heard this too many times - it seems every smoker and drinker and person with weight challenges knows one! Ah if this mythical creature existed - why would we limit ourselves? Even if they did not exist we might invent them in the hope of getting away with it. An alcoholic seriously told me that his Doctor had suggested that if he stop drinking the (this is real folks!) 4 bottles of wine and 1 bottle of Brandy a day he would die. I suggested that the words were more likely: If you don't STOP doing that you will die an unpleasant death. I hate to be a downer but you need to quit / stop smoking and incidentally moderate drinking of alcohol.
My approach is to help people to see WHY they are smoking - that way they will be less likely to start again. More often than not if we are persuaded to ignore the myths and face up to the fact that smoking cigarettes is largely sucking poisons through a tube then you will be motivated to stop. The other realisation has to be that experts have been peddling lies to us for many years to sell their product. Would you keep playing Russian Roulette with a loaded gun with one live bullet in the chamber if I told you that it was a myth that the bullet would kill you?
This means that when I work with a client I need to find WHY they smoke and more importantly why they want to stop. Sometimes I have to take a curveball approach: One man came to me and I asked WHY and WHEN he smoked. He only smoked in his Car because people "cut him up" or "tailgated" him and it made him angry so he needed a cigarette. I told him that I was going to do something under hypnosis which he might think was bonkers - but to live with it for one week. I hypnotised him and suggested that any road offenders would seem to be wearing a yellow curly Clown's wig, a red nose and a clown's make up.
Sure enough he looked at me as though I needed to see a Hypnotherapist.
A week later I asked him if he had smoked? "No" he said " I did laugh a lot though!" We then looked at his other incentives to stop smoking - his young daughter told him that she wanted him to see her grown up with Kids of her own. He also wanted to be fitter. This was an easy sell for me to his subconscious and he stopped smoking for good.
I am not a Hypnotherapist that offers a one session quit smoking programme - but that is because I believe that we should be person centred and deal with that person's issues - sometimes this will involve regression to put some past issue behind them and sometimes it will be giving them strategies to deal with anxiety panic or stress. Each person has differing reasons so I recommend that you find a Hypnotherapist that will tailor to your specific needs - some just use a scatter gun approach and that is just a numbers game - some will quit some won't and get their money back or some will start again a few months down the line. If that happens then it just means that we haven't helped the client to put the habit behind them.
There is more on my website plus all the statistics if you really want to know the truth about smoking. One fact that is there is that Allen Carr stopped smoking with a Hypnotherapist and Matt Damon called stopping smoking with a Hypnotherapist: "The best decision of my life". Check it out.
