Are You A Yo-Yo Dieter?
Are You A Yo-Yo Dieter?

The vast majority of my new clients have been trying to lose weight and keep it off for most of their adult lives. The typical label they have for themselves is "a yo-yo dieter" their weight goes up and down, up and down, just like a yo-yo!

The Towards Frame vs The Away From Frame

One of the first things I look for when a client tells me they're a yo-yo dieter is whether they tend to operate mainly in the towards' frame or the away' from frame. So what exactly do I mean by that?

Well, it means that some people seek to motivate themselves by moving towards something they want, for example:-

A smaller dress size

Looking good for my holiday

Feeling good about myself

Whilst others seek to motivate themselves by moving away from something they don't want, for example:-

Being a size 18

Looking fat in my bikini

Feeling bad about myself

How Does This Affect Motivation To Lose Weight?

The fact is that either approach can motivate you for a while. Let's face it, if clients are yo-yo dieters they have lost weight in the past, whether they operate mainly in the towards frame or the away from frame, it's just that they've put it all back on again.

The challenge with people who operate mainly in the away from frame when it comes to motivation, however, is that once they're far enough away from the perceived problem, they lose motivation. It's no longer such a big deal. So, once they're no longer a size 18 or less worried about how they're going to look in their bikini or feeling less bad about themselves, the motivation is no longer there.

For those that operate in the towards frame, they may no longer be a size 18 but they want to be an even smaller dress size, they want to look as good as they can on holiday and they want to feel as good about themselves as they can.

Spot the difference?

Keep In The Towards Frame & End Yo-Yo Dieting Forever

So, if you perceive yourself to be a yo-yo dieter consider how you seek to motivate yourself. Do you operate mainly in the towards frame or the away from frame? Do you think about what you do want or what you don't want?

If you operate mainly in the away from frame, then seek to flip' your goals around. If you know what you don't want, consider what you do want. Flip your goals into the towards frame and see how much easier it is to stay motivated to lose weight and keep it off. It could signify the end of yo-yo dieting forever!
