The Fast Fix - Sunburn Treatment Quickly Eases Pain In 7 Simple Steps

These simple seven steps should be started immediately after you first discover that you are suffering sunburn, there really is no substitute for early sunburn treatment. What we don't realize is that we can be literally burned to a crisp before we even know that there is a serious problem..

To that end, if you can remember to check yourself and your kids frequently to see if you're beginning to see a touch a pink, you would be way ahead of the game as far as the after math of severe sunburn is concerned.

Protecting yourself against sunburn is basically a mind-set that you should develop now and for the rest of your life. Just make it a habit to gather together the things you will need before you go outdoors. At our house, we have a little shoulder bag that contains sunscreen, hats, light long sleeved shirts and spare sunglasses for everyone in the family. If you keep all your sun protection gear together in such a fashion, then you only have to remember to take the one bag, which has everything you will need to protect you and your family from the ravages of the suns rays.

If you or your loved ones do accidentally end up with a sunburns (aren't they all accidents?), first realize that it may take from twelve to twenty-four hours to know the extent of the damage, therefore you should assume a severe sunburn treatment is necessary until you know the difference.

Here are some sunburn treatments to both immediately ease the pain and also help with long-term skin damage:

1. Take cool baths and apply cool compresses - Showers are fine as long as the water is cool, not cold and the pressure is not too high. You can use any soft cloth that will both hold the moisture and at the same time not be to rough on the tender skin.

2. Keep it moist - Apply aloe vera or a light moisturizing cream. Avoid heavy petroleum based products, as they tend to clog the pores and trap the heat in. You want the entire sunburned area to be able to breathe.

3. Avoid loudly touted sunburn treatment products - Avoid the ones that have "caine" in the name like benzocaine. There is evidence that these products could actually do more harm than good as they can sometimes act as a skin irritant.

4. Take OTC pain medication - These could include anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin or ibuprofen. Give according to the label directions, but avoid giving kids and teen's aspirin, which very rarely cause a potentially fatal syndrome called Reye's.

5. Take care not to pop or break the blisters - Breaking them will do two things. First, you will lengthen the healing process, and secondly, you increase the chance for infection.

6. Be gentle to peeling skin - If your sunburn is severe, in a few days, the top layer of skin will begin to peel, continue with the aloe or moisturizing cream during the peeling process.

7. Avoid using strong soaps - Strong soaps can irritate already tender damaged skin.

Remember, the earlier you start the treatment for sunburn, the more comfortable you will be during the seven days it will normally take to heal.
