People also put the newspaper in the dog cage, which is great for trips and such. If you have a young dog though, it might not be comfortable going to the bathroom in the same place that it sleeps every night. A dog trainer is another option. You can pay someone to potty train your dog for you. This can be expense, but the results are fast, and you might enjoy not having to look after your "child" for a few days.

A new method showing up of late are indoor pet potty grass, in which it is an pad that you lay on the ground that emulates a natural environment, and the dog uses as a bathroom. Spills aren't a problem, as the product can usually handle a large amount of liquid. You might not like having to empty the tray though, or having to deal if your dog decides to grace the pad with droppings. There are many solutions to the problem, each one being better suited for a different household.
