subject: Anger Management And Focus Strategies [print this page]

If you are angry, try to focus your energy on taking positive action to address what is causing your anger. Sometimes this action involves breathing techniques to enable focus and control. Sometimes it involves learning to address another person to constructively express what causes your anger. Anger management does not invalidate anger or consider it inappropriate -- it just helps prevent ensuing reactions from becoming out of control, which is inappropriate.

Becoming angry is not the answer. Once you accept this and see that your anger is not going to make you feel better and it certainly will not get rid of the problem you are half way there. Make a joke. Yes, laughing reduces anger or alternatively go and speak to somebody about how you feel. All of these things will help you control your anger. Some people may prefer to seek professional anger management therapy if the methods of self-control are not effective enough. Cognitive Behavioral Therapies are often used for this purpose.

Your game plan will depend on what the situation is. Many times it's just a matter of thinking if what happened will matter tomorrow. If it doesn't matter, then don't even bother pursuing it; just forgive and move on. If it will matter, then think about how you can use your anger for good. In my case, most of the time I use this fighting feeling as a way or proving people wrong. When I'm really upset, I will search for the correct answer to prove my point. I can't say that I'm always right, but I usually learn something that I can use in the future when a similar problem comes up again. This is the good that comes out of my anger.

The doctors at the psychological association also suggest that you slowly repeat a calming word or phrase such as "relax" or "settle down." This is a particularly effective form of anger management because it again takes your attention off the source of your anger and onto your calming words.

Then you should think before you react. Whenever you see that wave of anger coming, try to calm down, drink a glass of water and sit down. It should help you. Go for a walk or something. No one is immune to beautiful walk in the park where you can clear your thoughts.

Once you know what is making you upset you then need to take steps to fix it. To eliminate anger from your life means eliminating or at least decreasing the triggers that are causing your anger. Finally it has also been found that those individuals that hold on to their anger can develop health problems such as high blood pressure and organ damage. It is therefore very important to find constructive ways to release your anger or prevent anger from occurring in the first place.

The best way to cope with your anger is to write down how you feel; writing can take away your annoyance and irritation towards whatever is bothering you or whoever is bugging you. Plus, it can help you realize why you are angry in the first place. Another thing, taking a deep breath can calm your nerves and mind.
