subject: What Vehicle Do I Ship My Shipment In? [print this page]

In the majority of shipping situations, you're not going to have to the one that is concerned with selecting the most practical vehicle to carry your shipments. If you're just shipping a single package, order, or item of any kind, it is usually best to describe your item in detail to the company that you want to ship with, and they can provide you with the best possible recommendation. A perfect example of this is someone that is trying to ship something with a medical courier and is worried about the security of their shipment. The company is going to be able to tell them which vehicle has all the proper equipment and security in place to make sure that their order is safe for the delivery. This is, in the long run, a much more efficient means of selecting the proper vehicle than forcing yourself to make this decision. When you think about it, the courier company is going to have much more intimate knowledge of the vehicles in their fleet, and really of the shipping industry as a whole to make a more informed decision than you are going to be able to when it comes to selecting the perfect vehicle for your delivery.

The other good aspect of this way that the shipping industry works is that the average high quality courier is going to have enough vehicles to provide them with enough selection to be sure that you have the most practical vehicle possible for your shipment. When you use a vehicle that isn't suited to your type of delivery, you run the risk of either paying more than you should for a certain type of a delivery, or in the case of a medical delivery, you could even run the risk of breaking the law, as medical deliveries are supposed to be made in certain types of units.

If you are hiring a vehicle for the day or just for exclusive use for your company, then you may need to decide which vehicle to hire. You should always try to find a vehicle that is just big enough to make the shipments that you require of them. You obviously don't want to rent a car when you need a cargo van, or they'll have to make too many delivery runs, but if you rent too large of a vehicle, you also end up paying for wasted space.
