subject: Which Dj Equipment Does The World's Number One Use? [print this page]

So you want to be a DJ? Perhaps you fancy yourself as the next Armin Van Buuren, but whatever your style of music, it's important to get the right DJ equipment, and perfect your mixing before you get yourself out there.

Van Buuren has certainly got strong opinions on what creates the best sounds, and he of anyone should know; he's been voted number one DJ two years running by DJ Mag in a poll voted in by over 350,000 fans. So what kind of DJ equipment does the world's number one DJ use?

He doesn't take his laptop to clubs for sets. Ableton (a Windows or Mac solution for music) is great for his mix CDs and radio shows, but he feels performing with a laptop in a club not what DJing is all about. After all, clubbers can go to huge efforts to enjoy a big DJ experience; travelling sometimes internationally to the best club nights, and who wants to turn up on the dance floor to wait around for the DJ's laptop to reboot after crashing?

Van Buuren cites the Technics 1200 turntable and also the Pioneer CDJ1000MKII as the two pieces of DJ equipment that have proven themselves to be completely reliable in the club environment for him.

The Technics SL-1200 is a series of turntables made by Marsushita since 1972 under the brand name Technics. More than three million of the units have been sold since, and many DJs regard then as the most reliable and durable turntables available.

The Pioneer CDJ1000MKII is respected the world over as a fine piece of DJ equipment. A digital turntable released in 2001 by Pioneer Electronics, it was hailed as the first CD player which accurately emulated a vinyl turntable, and it allowed the DJ to scratch.

It also offers the ability for the user to adjust the in and out points of loops stored in the memory, making fine turning loops quick and easy.

It was the first CD player that was widely used in the best clubs around the world. Before the Pioneer, clubs used vinyl as most CD machines lacked DJ functionality and robustness.

Another reason the Pioneer became so popular was the advent of CD-R and CD-RW discs and machines to record music on to them, which were playable on the Pioneer. Prior to this, the acetate discs DJs used to record self-made music on to were expensive and quickly wore out.

So, when looking for DJ equipment, be sure to read reviews and choose the best machines to execute the best mixing. And take advice from the best DJs; they're the ones who can credit their equipment with getting them where they are today.
