When a friend first told me to try an internet dating site, I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. Dating Online? All I could think about were horror stories about people meeting stalkers and psychos. I couldn't have imagined getting myself into that kind of situation.
Little did I know, things have come a long way in the online dating community. There is a huge variety when it comes to choosing an online dating site. Many of these reputable sites actually screen their members, in order to keep things somewhat safe. You definitely want to research all of the sites out there and try to find one in which follows strict guidelines.
After much debate, I decided to swallow my fears and my pride, and just go ahead and sign up. It took a while to setup my profile, as I tried to get as detailed as possible about my personality. I didn't leave ANY areas blank. I browsed numerous profiles and the one thing I noticed, was that I paid much more attention to those that were very detailed. They kept me so interested. I could tell so much about their personality, as well as their sense of humor, all from reading their page. I also noticed that I skipped over profiles without pictures. Maybe I'm a bit superficial, but I'm not that much different than anyone else.
Much to my surprise, dating online was tons of fun. I found myself logging in all the time, just to see if I had any new "matches" or messages. It was actually rather addicting.
I am quite a shy person, always have been. One of the best parts of online dating was that I could let down my guard and just be myself. In real life situations, my shyness tends to get in the way and ruins any potential relationships. Online, I could say what I wanted to say without stuttering. This was almost like a medical breakthrough for me.
Did I come across any creeps? Well, of course I did. There are a few things I learned from my experience that I have shared with many people.
Never ask for or give out your number too soon- This is definitely a no-no and they should know better and respect you enough to not even ask yet.
Never overload someone with "winks" or messages- I have to admit, I was guilty of this. I got a little too carried away and went completely overboard. Guess what happened? They never responded. Once this was done to me, I understood why I didn't get a response. I made myself look totally desperate.
Be open to friendships- I met many people online and took the next step and actually met them in person. Some were huge disappointments, some weren't. Obviously, the reason I was on the site in the first place, was to find a potential partner. Little did I know, I ended up meeting a wonderful friend. Years down the line, we are still good friends today. So, definitely be open to friendships.
Don't be as closed minded as I was and give online dating a try. It is perfect for people who just don't have the time to get out and mingle. Or, maybe you happen to be shy, like I was. Whatever the case, the experience is well worth it. I met a ton of wonderful people, was finally able to be "me", and obtained a wonderful friend. Let your guard down and you could find a relationship that lasts a lifetime. It really IS possible.
