subject: Delhi To Make Diabetes Test Compulsory For Pregnant Women [print this page] At the inauguration of the symposium 'Diabetes Management in Pregnant Women', the Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia stated, "We have decided to make diabetes test mandatory for all pregnant women. It is being done to make them aware about diabetes and its ill effects.
Diabetes as a maternal health issue overlooked
Although, providing care for diabetes during pregnancy is vital for both the mother and child, the ailment as a maternal health issue is largely ignored.
The health care system is equipped to screen for diabetes, but doctors don't lay enough emphasis on this and often overlook the problem.
As a consequence, generally the ailment goes unnoticed. Diabetes is only diagnosed when the patient consults a specialist following complications like congenital malformation in the developing fetus or abortion.
Awareness campaign in the pipeline
In a bid to draw attention and create awareness for diabetes, the Delhi government is embarking on a project.
The health department intends to appoint diabetes educators from among Anganwadi workers and medical staff in Delhi government hospitals to undertake the objective of educating the people about the ill effects of diabetes.
Walia stated, "We have to touch the hearts and minds of the people and tell them about the bad effects of diabetes. We will have to educate them about the preventive measures.
She added, "Our aim is to educate people and teach them about lifestyle changes and treatment required to fight the disease.
Crackdown on misleading advertising
In order to ensure that the public is given accurate, scientifically proven information about real treatments for diabetes strict measures will be taken against misleading advertisements that make false claims of curing the disease 100 percent.
Walia stated, People should not believe the content of such false advertisements. They should consult doctors and take prescriptions. Prevention is the best way to keep away diabetes.
Concerned with the surge in diabetic cases in slum kids, Walia intends to get together with all the heads of private and government hospitals to put a mechanism in place so that the children receive free or subsidized insulin from health centers.
