subject: What Is Liposuction's Role In Weight Loss? [print this page]

America has a problemAmerica has a problem. Overweight and obesity levels are astronomical, and they seem to just keep climbing. More and more people are suffering from weight-related diseases like metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

The modern lifestyle makes it hard to live healthily and keep a healthy weight. Sedentary jobs keep people from being active. The many stressors of modern life also contribute to a breakdown in health and to weight gain. The lack of time that is so commonly experienced in today's life drives many people to eat fast food or prepackaged food rather than making home cooked, nutritious meals. Although America has no problem getting enough calories, many Americans are malnourished.

In addition to America's physical problems, its expanding waistlines seem to be giving it real psychological trauma as well. Body image issues are extremely common in today's America. As the population is presented with idealized images of perfection in the media but for the most part remains imperfect (and often unhealthy), many people struggle with feelings of self-worth and esteem.

Naturally, people want to solve these problems. They want to look young, vibrant and attractive, like the stars that they see in Hollywood. Furthermore, most people want these results now. Often this leads people to turn to cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction (also called lipoplasty and lipectomy).

Although lipoplasty can be extremely effective as a trimming and shaping procedure, it is not well-suited to large scale weight loss. The surgery targets specific body areas to remove excess and unwanted fat. Some of the most popular target areas include the stomach, the hips, the thighs and the breasts.

The surgery can typically only remove 10 or so pounds of fat. Removing more adds significantly to the amount of trauma that the surgery causes the body. This means that the surgery works best on people who are relatively close to their target weight (a good ballpark range is within twenty-five pounds of their ideal weight).

Removing more fat than this can lead to large complications, including putting the body into shock and death. Removing more fat can also increase the chance of minor complications, and it can make it less likely for a patient to be able to get optimal aesthetic results.

Liposuction tends to work best as the icing on the cake in a weight-loss plan. People should first do all that they can to lose weight naturally (through diet and exercise). Once they have lost as much as they can, lipoplasty can help to smooth out their remaining problem areas, leaving them with a body that looks better and is also healthier.
