subject: Who Gets More Liposuction--men Or Women? [print this page]

Liposuction (also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is one of the biggest things in America today. For twelve out of the past thirteen years, the procedure has ranked as the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in the country. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo the procedure.

Historically, far more women than men have undergone the procedure. According to many stereotypes, it is more acceptable for women to undergo cosmetic surgeries such as lipectomy than men. However, there are some signs that times are changing. Even if men are not poised to take over as the gender most likely to undergo lipoplasty, more and more men are turning to the procedure.

Current statistics indicate that men comprise between ten and twenty percent of the liposuction market. While this may not sound impressive, it does show a marked rise from previous years. Additionally, surveys and polls indicate that popular opinion among men is shifting to be more accepting of cosmetic surgery. One poll in Britain even suggested that the number of men willing to consider plastic surgery was greater than the number of women willing to consider the same thing, even if the numbers worked out differently in actuality.

Although women get far more liposuctions than men, the procedure has much more competition among women. Among men, lipoplasty is clearly the number one cosmetic surgery, and it has held a strong hold on that position for a number of years. Among women, the number one spot gets switched out much more frequently. The number one spot typically switches back and forth between lipoplasty and breast augmentation. This past year, for example, breast augmentation topped the charts as the most popular cosmetic surgery among women. In fact, so many women underwent breast augmentation that breast augmentation was the number one cosmetic surgery among both genders.

The rise in the popularity of male lipoplasty may be due to changing societal conceptions of the role of men. In the past decades, gender roles have been relaxed and redefined, making it more acceptable for men to put a focus on their appearance. Similarly, men have been exposed to more and more idealized images of male beauty in the media. This may account for a growing feeling on the part of men that they need to maintain a high standard in their physical appearance. Given that these societal processes are still ongoing, it will be interesting to see whether the liposuction numbers continue to equalize as the years go on.
