subject: Autism Treatment Respen-a, Pharmacies, Prescriptions And Autism Treatment [print this page]

I have received many questions on whether or not Respen, Reserpine or Respen-A is a homeopathic medication. And Reserpine is found as both an allopathic medication but also as a homeopathic one through the HPUS system. Respen-A has what we call a homeopathic dose range of Reserpine. Through the HPUS system, the dosage of Reserpine in Respen-A is .01 mg and that qualifies as a homeopathic medication. Now, there could be debate between conventional homeopaths on that.

It is considered a prescription medication for the simple fact that is it not currently manufactured and therefore it has to be compounded. Any medication that is altered in any way must be compounded and therefore is considered a prescription medication. One example is if you wanted to turn Nystatin into an oral suspension. It would need to be compounded and taken from a powder and have flavorings added to it. A special compounding pharmacy would need to do that and you would need a prescription. This even applies to over the counter medications. If you wanted to make Aspirin into an oral suspension, it would need a prescription and a special compounding pharmacy would need to alter it from its current form and add flavoring to it and make it into an oral suspension. So because Respen-A is not currently manufactured, it does require a prescription and must be specially compounded through a special compounding pharmacy.

You have a few options as far as compounding pharmacies around the country that currently prepare Respen-A, including the main pharmacy that is called Custom Prescription Shoppe in Washington State. Other specialty compounding pharmacies that can dispense Respen-A include at this time (October 2010), Wellness Pharmacy in Alabama and Hopewell Pharmacy in New Jersey. There may be others that I dont know of at this recording and certainly there may be more in the future. But currently there are three pharmacies in the US that can dispense Respen-A as well as one pharmacy in Canada also. To find out more information about where you can get Respen-A you can check their website at www.respen-a.com.
