Buying Points
Buying Points

If you are unhappy with a point spread or a total point number, it is possible on most of the major online sports books to buy points in your favor. This seems like an attractive option, but you will end up paying for this privilege over time because most sports books will double the vig on these types of wagers. For each half point you buy, it is standard practice to add 10 percent to the sports book's juice. For instance, a standard bet on the spread is a -110 proposition, meaning you need to wager $110 in order to win $100. If the spread is -7.5 points, it is a common practice for bettors to purchase that extra half point for $10 more in the event that their team only wins by a touchdown (plus an extra point). Instead of the standard $110, there is an extra $10 added on to make the bet $120 to win $100. This extra $10 takes the bet from a losing one to a draw if the team only wins by 7 points, saving the bettor $110.

As mentioned earlier, buying points will be in the sports book's favor over the long haul. There are two main reasons for this:

There is no extra reward for you when you are correct while the sports book collects double vig from you when you are wrong. The $20 vig for $100 bets adds up quickly, making this type of wager more attractive to the sports books.

It only creates the illusion of control for bettors. Face it, the NFL handicappers for sports books spend their entire day figuring out the lines for football games. They also have the advantage of being able to move lines as the betting for certain teams progresses. They can move the line to wherever they want, while you are limited in the number of points you can purchase. You might think you are getting a good deal, but the ball is still in the sports book's court.

This does not mean that each and every bettor will lose money if they bet with adjusted point lines. By being smart about it, you can adjust these lines to be more in your favor. This is especially true when the spread involves a 3 or a 7. This will create a few more bets that end in draws or wins, but it will give you a cushion so that you will not lose as much. But beware, the sports books do not pay extra when you are right with your wagering, but you will be paying them an extra 10 percent when things do not go in your favor. The more accurate your forecasting is though, the less you will experience this.
