I sometimes hear from people who ask me if medifast is a quick fix type of diet which helps you loose weight for the short term, but then leaves you vulnerable to gaining the weight back once you go off of it. I understand these concerns because I had them myself. But I found this not to be the case. I will explain this more in the following article.
Medifast Does Help You To Loose Weight And Have Success In The Short Term, But It Also Teaches You How To Keep It Off In The Long Term: Admittedly, while you are on this diet, you eat the medifast meals that the company provides to you. And, for the most part, so long as you eat them, you should continue to loose weight. But, there will usually come a time where you have reached your target weight loss and will want to go off the diet and resume your regular eating. This causes many people a lot of anxiety. Some people tell me that they find this diet to be sort of a crutch. They know what to expect and feel secure for as long as they are on it and so they become scared to go off of it.
But, what they often forget is that they have learned to make healthful choices with their lean and green meal. A large part of this diet is the "lean and green" meal that you are asked to prepare each day. This consists of lean protein and three servings of low glycemic veggies. Most people who have been on this diet for a while have collected a slew of lean and green recipes to give them more variety. In short, they've learned to make tasty and healthful meals that give them a sense of control and additional variety.
Well, that one daily main meal is really the basis for medifast giving you long term results. If you take what you have learned during this process and begin to make lean and green meals for most of your meals, you often will not have problem because you're already leaned how to make low calorie, low carb choices which are high in protein and fiber. And, if you are able to keep this up, then you will likely be taking significantly less calories and carbs than you might be if you had never learned how to eat more healthfully.
Also, frankly, at least in my experience, your opinions and your outlook about food changes when you are on medifast. You no longer place such a huge emphasis on what you are eating. For example, I used to love sweets. But now, if I sneak my beloved ice cream with my regular favorite toppings, it taste extremely sweet and thick to me. The thrill is sort of gone, which is a good thing. The same holds true with foods with a lot of fat or salt. They just taste extreme and so I don't crave them nearly as much. Or, if I do, I'm fine with a small portion because otherwise it's just too much of a good thing.
Medifast Does Have A Transition (And Then Maintenance) Program Which Helps With Your Long Term Results And Success: I find that many people are worried about making abrupt or dramatic changes. They worry about getting out of the habits that they worked so hard to embrace. Medifast doesn't just throw you to the wolves here. There is a 4 week transition program that helps you to take baby steps with this. You gradually add back more foods, choices, and calories to your diet.
For example, at first, you add more vegetables and calories. Then, you add in fruit, Eventually, you add in more dairy. Finally, you add in more grains and snack foods. At the end of the transition phase, you've gradually taken baby steps toward more traditional eating. But you're still encouraged to eat several small meals, which isn't a big deal because this has likely already become a habit. The company has tons of free support if you need it. Don't by shy. That's what it's there for.
Once you've done the transitional phase, you will generally move on to the maintenance phase. This is where most people are at about 1500 calories and may or may not be using some of the medifast meals as snacks. (I will probably always want to have the shakes and bars.) Basically, this is where the company encourages you to experiment with the right amount of calories and meals that are going to keep you at your ideal weight. Sometimes you'll need to tweak this a bit. But it's important to remember that you're likely more prepared than you might think.
It's highly likely that, while you were on this diet, you learned new skills and habits to ensure that this is a long term rather than a short term fix for you.
