For homeowners looking for a more environmentally friendly flooring option for their homes bamboo flooring is probably the number one choice, closely followed by cork flooring.

Bamboo floors are as strong and long lasting as their more traditional hardwood counterparts but they also score big on the green scale as they are made from a very easily renewable resource.

In its pure and natural state bamboo creates a flooring plank that is extremely durable and rather light in color. However, when you look at the bamboo flooring options available, you will find that it is offered in a wide range of colors ranging from the lightest yellows to the darkest of chocolate browns. These extremely attractive darker colors are created by using a process called bamboo carbonization.

Bamboo flooring begins as a rather flimsy plant and ends up as a tough and long lasting flooring plank and on that journey it goes through several different production processes. If it is destined to be a darker colored flooring material it also has to be carbonized, an extra step. The bamboo is quite literally boiled at very high temperatures which causes the sugars it contains to change its natural color. The longer that the bamboo is allowed to boil, the darker it will end up.

The only real downside to carbonizing bamboo is that the end result is somewhat softer than bamboo that has not been treated in this manner. Usually a carbonized bamboo floor is between 20-30% softer than other bamboo floors.

This often means that if installed in a very high traffic area carbonized bamboo floors may not wear as well as some other flooring options, making it a poor choice for a hallway or a busy kitchen where natural bamboo flooring will hold up as well, if not better. In a medium traffic room though, such as the living room or a bedroom carbonized bamboo flooring works extremely well, especially from an aesthetic point of view.
