subject: Microdermabrasion After Pregnancy: Its Effect On Stretch Marks [print this page]

Most people who have heard about microdermabrasion likely think of it as a way to get rid of acne scars, fine lines, and other facial blemishes. However, it is now known that it can also eliminate stretch marks accrued during pregnancy. Considering how many women feel there is no hope to get rid of them, it is helpful to learn more about this breakthrough.

The cause of stretch marks is scarring within your skin's middle layer, called the dermis. When collagen and elastin begin to break down due to major changes in the area, they have trouble going back to their original form. This creates scars, which often extend to the outer layer, or epidermis. For this reason, microdermabrasion can be effective in eliminating the appearance of them.

This procedure is known for rejuvenating the skin after sloughing off the first layer of cells. This will get rid of most stretch marks, although for the deeper scarring, more sessions than usual might be required.

Since the doctor has a choice on how strong the spray of small crystals is, there is always the choice of turning it up so that it penetrates the deeper layers. You will likely find out what you need at the consultation, though you might not know how many sessions are required yet.

Deep scarring requires several sessions of microdermabrasion. Most patients, however, will need it performed many times anyway. In fact, some patients need up to 12, usually a few weeks apart. This might seem like a miracle cure compared to lotions that don't work, but there is clearly some time commitment involved. It is considered a noninvasive treatment, though, which is a positive trait of medical procedures.

Though you might be glad to rid yourself of lotions, after the procedure you will likely be given a few different kinds. They can help you heal, as well as protect your skin during the process. Expect your skin to be quite red and raw, as you just eliminated the outer layer's cells. You will likely be told to avoid the sun until the epidermis begins to grow back normally.

There is obviously not much you can do during to pregnancy to prevent stretch marks, shorts of rubbing lotion everywhere at all times. Even this does not prevent the scarring from occurring in many women, and this can be a cause of insecurity. Rather than waste your time buying creams and lotions and avoiding showing any skin, consider microdermabrasion.
