Wise Men Always Wear Uggs!
Wise Men Always Wear Uggs!

Since when do wise men wear Uggs? Its not a question I would normal ask but having just been to my son's Nativity play at school and seeing the performance from the perspective of a camel' (things aren't what they used to be and its not the same as when I was at school!) I noticed the three wise men walking across the stage in their pillow cases and Uggs! It did look pretty cool to be honest and I was quite pleased that they had been politically correct and had cast two girls in wise men roles but still, Uggs in a Nativity didn't seem to sit well with me.

Shepherds maybe, because Uggs would have been the perfect footwear for a shepherd in those times, and even a great pair of Ugg Kensington's would have had Mary laughing all the way to Bethlehem as her feet and legs would have been as cosy as anything! Maybe the story wouldn't be the same if Mary had a pair of Uggs as the journey on the little donkey wouldn't have been so tough. We'll never know because obviously they didn't have Uggs in those days (and that also depends on whether you believe in the whole Nativity story in the first place).

Nativity stories never seem to be about the actual Nativity story of Mary and Joseph and having to go to Bethlehem and having to make do with a stable for the night and Jesus being born etc etc. I don't know why this is but my son's Nativity story was told mainly about a hopeless camel who got lost a lot and then followed a bright start and found its way to Bethlehem by following a star, that's how they shoe-horned in the Mary and baby Jesus bit. Similarly, when I asked my friends' son what part he was playing in his school nativity he said proudly I'm an alien'. To be precise he was alien number four (there were in fact five aliens in total in his Nativity). It is a bit sad that we can't watch traditional Nativity stories like we used to perform when we were younger but I suppose times change and I'm obviously not keeping up with things. So next year, when its my youngest son's turn to start his stage career in his school Nativity I will try not to look surprised when he comes home and tells me he's going to be a rock star or a frog, I'll just wait and see how they'll get Mary and Joseph into that one!
