subject: Can Hoodia Help You Lose Weight? [print this page]

Hoodia is hot off the press in the diet industry, the next big thing firms are advertising to encourage dieters to splash out and buy their products. It is Hoodia Gordonii, not a new invention, but one receiving new attention as the battle against fat continues. Generally, once a diet supplement is given worldwide press publicity, it is likely related to something negative. In recent years, there have been reports on the health implications associated with numerous weight loss preparations that did very little to burn fat but much to damage hearts and bank balances. With Hoodia, there is attention, but it is completely different; Oprah Winfrey, well- known for her long struggles with weight, delivered an impartial report on Hoodia in her magazine, while respected news reporter Lesley Stahl sampled Hoodia in its most natural form for a segment on 60 Minutes. National and International media have given Hoodia Gordonii a lot of exposure and while not everybody insists it is the miracle cure to losing weight, there are few unfavourable things to say about it. The technical name is Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia is a prickly cactus and has the ability to keep water in its roots and thick stems. Because the Hoodia plant is indigenous to the desert, the water stores help it to hold up in the heat. Hoodia is native to South Africa, though it may also be found in other desert regions. The Hoodia plant is categorized by its cactus-like appearance, green stalks enclosed in sharp points, and by the brown/pink buds that sometimes appear from the stalks. take away the spikes and dig into the flesh of the plant, and you have the key ingredient for a potent appetite killer.

It is thought that the dietary advantages to taking Hoodia were revealed in Africa, by people who had initially used the cactus for other healng purposes. Noting that individuals who ate the plant could work longer without eating so much, these same people determined the plant could act as an appetite suppressant. As demonstrated by the many media reports done on Hoodia previously, ingesting the plant can cause a person to want less food and as a result lose weight. While more stringent scientific research has shown that it is not totally conclusive that Hoodia works for everybody as a diet supplement, no serious side effects are recorded. However, informal tests of Hoodia in an extracted kind has shown loss of appetite in some people. As with taking any diet supplement, it is wise to appreciate that a supplement is just that. It is an aid, not the only key to safe, effective weight loss. When used with a healthy eating program and exercise, a supplement can greatly boost your weight loss if taken consistantly. In this instance, Hoodia is sure to be successful.
