The Beauty and History of Southern Spain
The Beauty and History of Southern Spain

In 2001 I traveled to southern Spain to line up our new home. Little did I recognize what adventures this new life would bring. I discovered some of the foremost breathtaking scenery there's to be enjoyed in Europe. The gorgeous mountains of the Sierra de Las Nieves (The Snowy Mountains) in addition to some of the foremost amazing history dating back tons of years. When during this half of Spain it's a must to go and see Gibraltar and its own unique history.

The rock of Gibraltar has played a terribly necessary role in several battles including of course the Second World War. Very little did I grasp at the time that while obtaining concerned with a brand new TV channel launched in 2007 on the Sky Digital platform called "Living in Spain TV" I'd get to fulfill a most remarkable gentleman who was and still is one in all the last remaining true heroes of the Second World War.

I met Sydney Knowles through a mutual friend who was one of our camera men working on Living in Spain TV. I used to be asked if I would love to create a TV documentary on this man, as he had thus abundant to say, and thus several fascinating stories to inform, leading to intrigue around the death of his diving buddy and shut friend Commander "Buster" Lionel Crabb.

The British government at the time didn't need Commander Crabb to go and work as a diver for the Russians when the war, and thus Sydney firmly believes that the secret service had Commander Crabb killed. Something that Sydney has never forgiven the British government for. The terribly same folks who he had spent the previous years during the war risking his life a day to assist protect.

If this kind of intrigue and journey interests you, then I might strongly suggest you purchase a copy of his current bestselling book "A Diver within the dark" which is obtainable through Woodfield publishing.

I have been honoured to satisfy this man and interview him on film concerning his everyday adventures and hardship of being a member of the Navy's "Underwater operating party" that was the terribly beginnings of nowadays's Royal Navy Divers. Sydney is thought to be the "Grand Daddy" of all deep sea divers worldwide, and has the utmost respect of all brave young men dedicated to the art of diving, whether it be for pleasure or profession.

Filming the documentary around the Andalucian areas of Coin and also the docks of Gibraltar taught me a lot about the Second World War, and also the part Sydney played in the conflict against the Italians before Capitulation. I have no doubt in my mind that Sydney was responsible for saving thousands of lives of young British sailors who used Gibraltar harbour during the war, and I guarantee that whoever reads this text will have somebody in his or her family who would not are alive if it had not been for Sydney and therefore the underwater working parties exhausting and dedicated work.

This story is thus amazing when you learn the details of what these men went through, they even made a film about it called "The Silent Enemy" which starred Laurence Harvey as Commander Crabb, and Michael Craig as leading seaman "Knowles". It conjointly starred Sid James who played Chief petty officer Thorp.
