subject: Big Breakfast Doesn't Promote Weight Loss--study [print this page]

The study published in the 'Nutrition Journal,' points that though breakfast is an important meal of the day, it may contribute to the weight gain.

Eating patterns examined

Debunking the belief that a large breakfast activates the metabolism and helps one consuming light meals throughout the day, the researchers from the University of Munich claim that those who have a heavy first meal continue to eat a big lunch and dinner as well.

To reach this finding, the researchers tracked 280 obese people and 100 normal weight people for two-week period.

On analyzing the participants' diaries the researcher found that those who had a big breakfast, 400 more calories than the small breakfast, ended up consuming 400 extra calories throughout the day.

All the study participants were asked to continue with their eating habits and write down each meal they take.

Some volunteers had large breakfast, some took small meal, and some skipped it.

Heavy breakfast means extra calories throughout day

On analyzing the participants' diaries the researcher found that those who had a big breakfast, 400 more calories than the small one breakfast, ended up consuming 400 extra calories throughout the day.

The only difference was that study subjects who took a very large breakfast decided to skip the mid-morning snack, but this did not offset the extra calories they had already consumed.

Dr. Volker Schusdziarra, lead researcher from Technical University of Munich, stated, The results of the study showed that people ate the same at lunch and dinner, regardless of what they had for breakfast."

A high calorie breakfast includes foods like butter, bread, marmalade, cheese, sausages, yogurt, cake and eggs.

Light breakfast recommended

As breakfast plays a very important role in the overall calorie intake, one should take a light breakfast, as a part of the balanced diet program.

Schusdziarra suggested, Saving calories at breakfast gives you a little bit more for the day itself. He added, If someone likes a high-calorie breakfast, then they have to save the calories in another meal.

At the same time, breakfast should not be skipped as it provides essential nutrients to the body.

Also, skipping the first meal often leads to unhealthy snacking before lunch, and at times unhealthy lunch.

A healthy breakfast should include fruits, whole grain breads and oatmeal.
