subject: How Many Different Types Of Barbecue Sauce Are There? [print this page] There are multiple different types of barbecue sauce, so many that it would probably be impossible to get an accurate number. Instead it is more efficient and comprehensible to classify a few categories that can better describe the many different types. The categories we will use are classic, smoked or hickory, sweet, spicy, teriyaki, alternative, and foreign.
First there is classic bbq sauce. This sauce is normally a mixture of ketchup, mustard powder and Worcestershire, along with a few other ingredients. There is nothing to jazz it up or alter the flavor. This sauce goes best with burgers and food strait off the grill.
The next flavor of barbecue sauce is smoked or hickory. This sauce has an amazing grilled flavor and can be used very efficiently as a grilled alternative. For example you can bake a steak in this sauce or broil burger in the oven and it will still maintain that barbecued flavor.
The smoked sauces generally have a smoked flavor. If you are to search though for a individually prepared smoked bbq sauce or a specialty sauce form the internet, chances are that the sauce or an ingredient in the sauce will have actually been smoked. This gives the flavor an amazing and authentic flavor that is sure to go hand in hand with whatever it is you are cooking.
Sweet barbecue sauce can include anything from brown sugar, maple, or Hawaiian barbecue sauce. The Hawaiian is always a favorite of the sweet sauces and is especially good on pizzas and with pineapple. Shiskabobs that have been barbecued with pineapple and tri-tip and perfect for a sweet Hawaiian sauce. These sauces have sugar and natural sweetener in them, sometimes vanilla extract.
Spicy bbq sauce has may variations. Red pepper to ginger sauces can be found all over. The intensities and flavors of spicy barbecue sauces stretches across the board, the ginger and spicy mustard type flavors are more gourmet, while the red pepper and extremely spicy sauces are best for dipping and specialty items.
Teriyaki and foreign bbq sauce flavors are generally more strewn from the original barbecue flavor but none the less are still delicious. The more variety that the sauce comes in the more vast the options the cook has to use it on. There are always the classic items to use the sauce on like grilled items and as dipping, but barbecue sauce can also be great with main dishes. With so may different flavors and such grand variety it is not surprising it can be such a versatile sauce.
