Guidelines on how to Notice Standard Indications of ADHD in kids

Many children are often suspected of having ADHD, since most of the symptoms can be normal child behavior. For many parents, this just adds to their frustration. True ADHD can present itself through a variety of symptoms as well. One instance alone then, can not determine that a child is ADHD. Proper testing and diagnosis can only be done by a trained professional. In hopes of educating more people, we have listed three of the most common symptoms of ADHD.

One symptom is the ADHD child has a tremendously hard time with following through with something, and it's usually instructions of some kind. This can mean that when you tell your child to take out the trash they forget to do it becuase something in between has distracted them. But it's also important to remember that not ever active child is suffering with ADHD. That may seem obvious, but many parents are naturally concerned and possibly worried about their child and this disorder. ADHD and your child can be worrisome to many parents. So it's important to look for other possibilities such as inability to follow through, etc.

Three categories exist for ADHD symptoms. The classification can then be extended further by the description of each behavior. The first category is the Hyperactive or Impulsive type of ADHD which actually is the classical ADHD condition. Now there are additional categories, including the second category of Inattentive type, also know as ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder. Behavior in a child that is both hyperactive and inattentive falls into the third category, typically referred to as the Combined type.

Another symptom you need to be aware of is the avoidance of mental effort for a larger than normal time period. Video games are a means of mental break for most kids and they of course would rather do that then homework. And of course you know homework has never been a popular subject with kids. But still, most children do their schoolwork and are able to sustain the required effort to do so. So that is often seen in the ADHD child; the direct dislike or strong repulsion to most or all activities or tasks that do require mental effort for some greater length of time. Usually you will notice this where schoolwork is concerned.

The time that these behaviors have been observed in the child will lend more credence to a possible ADHD diagnosis. typically the behavior needs to be sustained over a 6 month period or longer. A professional evaluation is the next stage for a child who reaches this criteria, then on to the assessment stage. Once your doctor diagnoses the problem, you may find that you will need to take your child to a specialist.
