3 Weight Loss Myths

If you keep up on weight loss information, you are sure to come across a lot of tips. Some of these tips work, and some don't. The ones that usually don't work are the ones suggesting fad diets or diet pills. There are many weight loss myths and misleading information out there. In this article I will discuss three such myths.

Myth 1. It is possible to do spot reduction: Truth: You can't spot reduce, no matter what kind of workouts you do. If you only do crunches hoping to reduce belly fat, you will find that instead of reducing the fat, you are reducing the muscle under the abdomen. You need to do exercises that work out the whole body. Thats the only way you will get rid of the fat pockets that you can't spot reduce.

Myth 2. Cutting way down on calories will reduce body fat: Truth: People who crash diet in the hope of reducing their weight, don't realize that it is harming their body instead of helping any. When you don't eat for extended periods of time, your body goes into starvation mode. Your body will slow down your metabolic rate and burn muscle to produce energy. With crash dieting, you don't lose much fat, you lose needed muscle. Because of losing muscle instead of fat, once you go back to eating a regular diet, you will gain extra weight. The best way to lose those extra pounds is to do it slowly. When you lose weight slowly, you are more likely to keep the weight off.

Myth 3. Doing only cardio exercise will help you lose weight: Truth: It's true that cardio exercise can help you lose fat, but you need to include other types of exercise in your routine as well. Strength training not only helps you burn fat, but it builds muscle. The more muscle you have, the longer your metabolism will run higher, which helps you burn more fat.
