Why is it so difficult to maintain the diet for more than 1 week?

Nowadays, we are bombarded by images of spectacularly sculpted bodies like greek statues. It is very common to hear comments from people who are dieting because they want to have the body same as a celebrity or because someone commented on those extra pounds. More common still are those who see a scheme to fit into that dress for the party or to do well on the beach in summer.

The curious thing is that people do not sustain the diet for a long time. The average time that they face a diet is only eight days. But why does this happen? Why do most just give up? What is the best way to sustain a healthy diet for a long period? One study, which examined 1000 British women, found that only 4% of women felt secure with their bodies. About 42% were constantly trying to lose weight. Some said they began thinking about dieting because they were not satisfied with what they saw in the mirror, while others said they decided to diet because of any comments from the husband. But most could not sustain the diet for more than eight days.

What justifies this behavior of giving up diets is that many women decide to diet expecting an immediate result, a magic formula that make them lose weight very fast. Those are usually motivated by comments from friends, husband, boyfriend or so to get into a dress for a party that will happen in a week. What happens is that many women invest on restrictive diets, some cut carbohydrates, others are based on apple, soup etc. Because of these restrictions, besides being unhealthy, it is natural that it is difficult to sustain.

Another point is that such restrictive diets that many people undergo when they want a fast weight loss result is that they often offer fewer calories than the body expends itself at rest. And the consequence is that the person can actually lose weight, but not in a healthy way. As a person consumes fewer calories than the body needs, the cells end up saving energy and the result is that the metabolism slows down and the person ends losing lean body mass. Thus, with slow metabolism is much more difficult to lose weight.

Ideal diet to follow for a long period of time

Ideal for anyone who wants to lose weight is to change dietary habits and a lot of patience. Ideally, the person passes through a diet and learn which foods really worth eating. People have to stop thinking about calories and think more about the quality of food that they consume. Must enter the menu those that are rich in nutrients. Another important thing to ensure success of the diet is to have patience and habits change slowly. No use cutting food at once and pull everything you like, because the risk of dropout is higher. If a person loves chocolate, for example, the ideal dose is the amount that she can control herself. Thus, with small steps that people can bring along healthy habits and keep them for a long period.
