If you live in any of the Southern States of the USA you will know exactly what is meant by that saying. It means simply that you are sitting in an advantageous or privilege position. It is a bit like we might say, `sitting pretty` which has a similar meaning. Sometimes sitting can also be the cause of something that does not set you apart as being superior; in fact, it can set you apart as being pretty stupid!
As we are talking about the USA, can you remember watching those old western films where there is the shootout in the street outside the saloon? You can envisage the scene. There are the two adversaries, facing each other, there hands by their sides, ready to draw their guns from their holsters.
I had this vision in mind when I saw thus guy come into the local pub with a group of loud friends. We all know the types. They have to laugh the loudest so that you can not conduct a conversation without it being punctuated by peels of raucous laughs for effect.
What really drew my attention to this particular person was the holster he had on his trouser belt. It looked like the ones they had in those western films, with guns in them! But in his case, it had a mobile phone it. Now it had taken me all my time to come to terms with the `bum bag`! Remember them? They were those ridiculous little plastic mini satchels that you had on a stretchy elastic belt around your waist, which you put your money and other things in. They were also heaven sent for thieves and muggers and very soon disappeared into the sunset of the 90s.
After a while, I gave up trying to hold conversations against the backdrop of constant bellowing laughter form behind me, so I just decided to finish the remainder of my drink and slowly and when I had finished it, I would make an early exit. However, I was intrigued by their conversation about mobile phone insurance. It would not normally be an exciting topic of conversation, but what struck me was the growing level of animosity between certain members of the group about various events and happenings over recent years when some kind of catastrophe had overtaken their phones.
From what I could gather, the guy with the holster was castigating one of his friends about the cost of mobile phone insurance and how it was utterly unnecessary. It would appear that his friend worked for an insurance company, so he was naturally standing his corner so to speak.
Thankfully, the eruption of voices seemed to be ebbing away and they were making their way to their seats in the restaurant. A few moments later there was the familiar sound of peels of loud laughter, this time however, followed by the `holster man` marching out side to his car and driving away at high speed!
When one of the group came next to the bar, I diplomatically asked what was that all about.
It seems that the `holster man`, had sat down without moving his holster, and sat on his phone, damaging the screen. It transpires he did not have insurance and after having his leg pulled by his friend, he had stormed off home!
So, the moral is, if you want to sit in the catbird seat, make sure that you remove your mobile phone first!
