subject: Unblocking Arteries Through Diets [print this page] Heart diseases are usually caused by our way unhealthy eating and the kind of lifestyle that we are living. With the emerging cases of obesity accompanied with high blood pressures, many kinds of heart diseases are occurring making it one of the main causes of deaths in the United Kingdom. With the ever growing obesity crisis in the nation, immediate solution is in need to battle this crisis. And with this comes a new study that could help people with heart problems. Researchers from Israel in collaboration with Germany, Canada and the U.S. have found out that a low-fat and low-carb diet such as Mediterranean diet are not just effective diets, but is also an effective process on clearing out blocked arteries.
The said study was conducted to 140 people and has found out that diets reduce the build up of fats in the arteries. By the end of the two year diet, five percent of the artery wall has been cut. The study goes as follows:
Volunteers followed one of three diets - a low-fat diet, a low-carbohydrate diet or a Mediterranean diet, which is based on eating lots of fruit and vegetables, and using olive oil as the main source of fat.
They were asked to stick to the diet for two years, and record what they ate in food diaries.
The study was carried out among overweight volunteers, mostly men, who were aged 40 to 65.
The researchers measured the volume of the wall of the carotid artery, the large artery in the neck which takes blood up to the brain using three dimensional imaging taken before the study and after the two year completion.
Though diets could take some time before it takes effect on the arteries, the study was still an interesting and conclusive one. Knowing that heart attacks and strokes are caused by clogged arteries, early solution through this could be done in order to prevent these occurrences.
